Reservation - Death of the Merit System
It was the day of my counselling for Engineering colleges. The guy behind me in the line ended up in a Anna Univ and I did not. The reason was just simple. I belonged to Forward Caste and he did not. It has been more than 6 yrs since the event took place..The memory is still green in my mind.
Years have passed and I moved on from my Engineering to my job...The lesion had began to ebb...Now the government has inflicted a new one...It wouldnt be exaggerating if I said I was completely blown down for couple of days after reading the news of new reservation policy by our Government...A glimmer of hope when Supreme Court put a stay on the bill in late March. Even then you can't savor the moment...TamilNadu govt calls out for a bandh opposing SC's judgement (like the current 69% reservation is not enough)...i didnt know to laugh or cry...
It really hurts not as a forward caste element but as a rightful citizen to see the governments short sightedness...I feel a a tinge of joy when I see the dollar value weakening against the rupee...On one side India is growing rapidly on economical front in the global backdrop...But things like these worry me about the future of deserving umpteen teens and future of our country which is in their hands...
Where is this country heading to? I am not some religious chauvinist against backward people nor am I completely against reservations..there should be reservations for well deserving students who cannot afford a degree...Not some son of a rich industrialist who neither will value the degree and worst takes up the seat of an eligible cadidate...
The bottomline is the canonical form of reservations should be based on economical mileu and not caste structure. reservation should really benefit less fortunate people, to unearth hidden diamonds and not compromise a well deserving student and a powerful India. Jai Hind!!
